Prostatitis is an inflammatory condition of the prostate. Unfortunately, in many cases, doctors cannot establish its cause. Patients cannot control when the condition will occur and how it will affect their lives, but, they can reduce the risk of prostatitis occurring by leading a healthy lifestyle.

Fortunately, scientists have discovered that the following foods can help prevent the occurrence of prostatitis;-

Cruciferous vegetables

These include broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, amongst others. They are rich in beta-carotene, which possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which help protect against prostatitis, prostate cancer, and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).

Fruits

Berries are rich in antioxidants, which protect against cellular damage. Also, they are high in vitamins and minerals, which help boost immune function. Watermelons are free of fat and sodium but are high in Vitamins A and C, which help boost immune health. Plus, watermelons are an excellent source of lycopene, a potent antioxidant that gives this fruit its beautiful colour.

However, avoid citrus fruits as they tend to exacerbate your prostatitis.

Green tea

For thousands of years, Asian communities have consumed green tea as a beverage for its potential health benefits. The tea is rich in catechin, a potent antioxidant that not only helps reduce the prevalence of toxic free radicals but also protects cells against cell damage while repairing the damage already incurred.

Green tea is one of the most versatile beverages. You can choose to take it hot in the morning in the place of your regular coffee, or you can serve it chilled for a cool refreshing beverage.

High-quality protein

Red and other processed meats are not ideal for your health, no matter how rich they are in proteins. Instead, turn to plant sources of proteins such as black beans, beans, chia, and hemp seeds. Black beans, for example, are a nutritional gold mine. They are not only rich in proteins, but also high in fibre.

Proteins help keep your organs healthy and working optimally, including the prostate. They are also critical in the development of healthy immune cells that help fight infections. And remember, fibre helps prevent constipation, which can be very painful when one is suffering from prostatitis.

Zinc

Zinc is an essential mineral found in large quantities in the prostate gland, suggesting its role in promoting optimum prostate health. Overall, zinc helps boost your immune function, which not only lowers your risk of infection but also helps repair damaged tissues. Though most of the studies done show the role of zinc in preventing prostate cancer and BPH, some clinical trials support its role in prostatitis.

While prostatitis may not be a life-threatening medical condition, it can be very uncomfortable and disruptive in your day to day lives. Doctors at Birmingham Prostate Clinic believe that prostatitis does not put someone at risk of acquiring prostate cancer or BPH later on in life. Even with this in mind, it is wise that you eat healthier to promote your prostate’s health and lower your risk of acquiring prostatitis. And remember, if you have any concerns about yourself or someone you know, it is always best to seek the help of a professional.
